the Mood-board: EXPLAINED.

Every year, the Pantone Color Institute announces a “Color of the Year,” chosen based on cultural, social, and design trends. This color sets the tone for fashion, interior design, branding, and beyond. Pantone also ensures that a specific shade looks the same regardless of material, medium, or location. You can read more about that here.

Pantone Colors refer to the standardized color system developed by the Pantone Color Institute, a globally recognized authority on color trends, matching, and consistency. The system is used across industries like fashion, interior design, graphic design, and product manufacturing to ensure accurate color communication.

What Is the Pantone Color System?

The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a universal color language that allows designers, manufacturers, and printers to match colors without direct contact. Each color is assigned a unique code (e.g., Pantone 17-3938 “Very Peri”), making it easy to replicate globally.

My preferred color is obviously Black.

I know that purple and gold are considered ‘Royal’ and ‘Regal’ colors. At the end of the day, I like colors that look good on my skin tone. Black may not look good on everybody’s skin tone. My son would argue that black isn’t even considered a “color.” I think it’s safe to say that we all agree to disagree.

Why You Care About Pantone Colors

I don’t know, most people don’t even know this exists. I’ll just explain what I have learned.

  1. Industry Standard: Designers and brands rely on Pantone for consistent and precise color representation.
  2. Cultural Influence: The “Color of the Year” reflects global cultural moods and trends, influencing industries like fashion, beauty, and decor.
  3. Collaboration and Inspiration: Pantone collaborates with major brands to create special collections and trends (e.g., Sephora x Pantone makeup collections).
  4. Creative Communication: It bridges communication gaps, ensuring creatives worldwide can reference the same shades for cohesive designs.
